Family Trip to Morocco: Marrakesh, Imlil & Agafay
Family tour
Begin and conclude your journey in Marrakesh! The 'Family Trip to Morocco: Marrakesh, Imlil & Agafay' is an in-depth cultural tour that offers a 7-day package, guiding you through Marrakesh and two additional Moroccan destinations. This family trip includes accommodations, an expert guide, meals, transportation, and more.
Day 1 Arrive in Marrakesh, Private Food Tour
Welcome to Morocco! As-salaam alaykum (peace be upon you). This North African nation is a vibrant mosaic of Arab, Jewish, and Berber cultures, with a touch of European influence due to its proximity to Spain and a history of French colonization. Morocco is exceptionally family-friendly, boasting a variety of souks, kasbahs, dunes, deserts, and beaches — an ideal backdrop for stimulating the curiosity of all ages.
Upon your arrival, a private driver will greet you and escort you to your riad in the heart of Marrakesh's medina, an area steeped in history with its labyrinthine lanes and lively markets. Take the time to settle into your riad, a grand home centered around a cool, open-air courtyard, complete with elegant archways, fountains, and detailed architecture that offers respite from the desert heat, often complete with a plunge pool.
The best way to immerse yourself in all that Marrakesh has to offer is through a private guided food tour. Over the next few hours, indulge in traditional treats, from distinctive Moroccan sweets to a genuine, flavorful tagine. As you and your family meander through this enchanting city, introduce the children to an array of new tastes and sensory delights. Afterward, enjoy the freedom to explore the souks and squares at your own pace or unwind with your children back at your riad.
Day 2: Explore Marrakesh, visit Anima Garden, and enjoy afternoon tea at the Royal Mansour Hotel.
Savor breakfast on your sunlit terrace this morning before setting out to explore Marrakesh's sights and sounds with the children. The day's activity is an ideal way for the youngsters to discover the city's treasures through a guided tour and an interactive treasure hunt. Admire the stunning architecture of the Ben Youssef Madrasa, wander through the vibrant souks, and learn about local customs as the environment ignites the children's imaginations, introducing them to this captivating and hospitable city.
Seek out a cool, shaded spot for lunch, then leave Marrakesh's lively atmosphere for the remarkable ANIMA Gardens, an oasis blending gardens, sculptures, and art. A private driver will take you 18 miles (30 km) southwest to this haven created by André Heller. Observe the children as they explore the expansive gardens, brimming with bamboo, palm trees, cacti, and large interactive sculptures, including works by Picasso and Keith Haring. Later, relish a tasty pastry at the garden's Café Paul Bowles while admiring the breathtaking mountain vistas from the rooftop seating.
Return to Marrakesh and maintain the serene mood with an opulent afternoon tea at the Royal Mansour Hotel. Despite its central location near Marrakesh's main square, Djemaa El Fna, the hotel offers a tranquil and stylish setting where children are not just welcome but celebrated with their own unique menu, complete with a vanilla marshmallow teddy bear. The remainder of your evening is free for you to enjoy as you please.
Day 3 Family Cooking Class at Amal Nonprofit Center, Pottery & Mosaic Workshop
Begin your morning leisurely, but be mindful of the time as a day filled with engaging activities awaits. Your first destination is the Amal Center, a charitable organization committed to the empowerment of underprivileged women by providing restaurant training and aiding in job placement. Experience the unique tastes of Moroccan cuisine through a culinary workshop designed for children. The little ones will be thrilled to play a game of spice identification while blindfolded.
Should the enticing aromas stir up an appetite, the center's culinary experts will guide you and your children in preparing a lavish, traditional tajine accompanied by flatbreads. As the tajines simmer gently over the flames, take the opportunity to learn about the NGO's mission and the inspiring success stories of the women who have benefited from their training and have subsequently prospered in their careers.
Post-lunch, delve into another facet of Moroccan arts and culture with a pottery and mosaic workshop. Under the guidance of your instructor, you and your children will master the intricate art of mosaic zellige, which involves cutting tiles into small pieces and piecing them together. For the younger children, a pottery workshop offers a simpler creative outlet. Celebrate your children's artistic achievements before moving on to Djemaa El Fna. There, from the comfort of a family-friendly rooftop café, watch the day turn to dusk and listen for the haunting melody of the evening call to prayer.
Day 4 Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Marrakesh, Transfer to Imlil
It's an exceptionally early start today, yet the rewards promise to be ample. As you make your departure preparations from Marrakesh, indulge in a final, sweeping view of the city from the vantage point of a hot air balloon. Witness the sun's gradual ascent over the desert, casting its glow on the rugged hills, charming villages, and verdant patches below. Savor a leisurely breakfast under the widening dawn sky, complemented by an assortment of exquisite Moroccan pastries, as you glide through the heavens. This moment is perfect for a memorable family photograph.
Upon returning to terra firma, proceed with checking out from your riad and arrange for a private conveyance to your next lodging in Imlil, nestled within the High Atlas mountains. Engage the children in a game of wildlife spotting—perhaps even catching sight of a majestic golden eagle—as you traverse through lush meadows and sweeping valleys en route to the town of Asni. Here, take a moment to stretch and enjoy a snack before continuing through the rolling hills of the Atlas range and the stunning vistas of Moulay Brahim Gorge. The journey to your destination, the village of Imlil situated at the core of Toubkal National Park, is marked by particularly picturesque scenery.
Upon arrival, acquaint yourself with your new surroundings and partake in a revitalizing glass of fresh mint tea, a cherished Moroccan tradition. Following the morning's early exertions, choose to either unwind for the remainder of the day or, if the hot air balloon ride has ignited a sense of adventure, embark on a gentle trek to Armed, the most elevated and expansive Berber village in the valley.
Day 5: Toubkal National Park and the Atlas Mountains, Berber Villages Mule Ride
Immerse yourself in the genuine essence of Moroccan countryside life by traversing traditional Berber villages on mule-back. This mode of travel is not only time-honored but also allows children to form a bond with these resilient and dependable animals. As you traverse, take in the serene beauty of the mountain peaks and the expansive desert. Enjoy a midday meal in the home of a local Berber family, known for their exceptional hospitality and warm reception of visitors.
Devote your time to engaging with your hosts as they introduce you to their agricultural practices and lands. Learn about the age-old Berber principle known as "the right of water," which ensures that each family in the village has sufficient water for their crops, provided they contribute to the construction and maintenance of communal irrigation systems and canals. Children will be delighted to assist in feeding the farm animals and harvesting fresh produce. Conclude your visit with a light refreshment, courtesy of your hosts, before returning to Imlil. The remainder of your evening is free for you to enjoy at your leisure.
Day 6: Transfer to the Agafay Desert, visit a Berber village, and enjoy a camel ride.
Bid farewell to Imlil today as you and your family transfer to the sweeping, majestic landscape of the Agafay Desert. Keep your camera close at hand during the two-hour drive as you travel through some of the country's most impressive scenery—your driver will make several stops throughout the journey so you can admire the views. If the kids are desperate for a run-around, stop at the Ourika Valley, where an experienced mountain guide will accompany you on an easy 90-minute hike to see the valley's famous waterfalls.
Hop back in the car, and as you approach Agafay, your driver will take you along a secluded mountain road and weave through traditional Berber villages, one of which will be your next stop. Yesterday's adventure in the Atlas mountains will have already given you a taste of the famous Berber hospitality, and today is no different. Lunch with your hosts and admire the stunning view over the Sidi Fares Valley as you hear how Berber women extract oil from the country's native argan fruit, which has become a much sought-after ingredient in the beauty industry.
As you descend into the Agafay Desert, pass through the Asni Valley, famous for its walnut, almond, and peach trees and the snowy summits of the beautiful Tahnaout Valley. Watch the glee on the kids' faces as you tell them you'll spend your last night in this fascinating country camping in the sands beneath the stars! Settle into your camp and enjoy a welcome tea before surprising the kids with one last treat—a camel ride across the desert. Stride across the arid plateau and watch the sun go down before returning just in time for dinner and a campfire beneath the stars.
Day 7 Transfer to Marrakesh & Depart
Regrettably, the time has come to say goodbye to Morocco. Following a last glimpse of the desert sunrise, your driver will escort you to the Marrakesh airport for your departing flight. Wishing you safe travels!
